How to set up a hyperbaric chamber at home

Room size, power, ventilation, the delivery route and a simple checklist so your chamber is ready to use the day it arrives.

How to set up a hyperbaric chamber at home guide cover

A home hyperbaric chamber is easier to set up than most people expect. A little planning before delivery means your chamber is ready to use the day it arrives. Here's what to think about.

1. Choose the room

A spare bedroom, home gym, study or a quiet corner of a large room all work. For a full-length soft chamber like the Lay 1.5, the cabin is about 80 cm wide and 200 cm long. Allow extra room to get in and out comfortably and to place the control unit alongside.

  • Allow a clear zone around the chamber for access and airflow
  • Choose a level floor that can take the weight of the chamber and equipment
  • Pick somewhere you'll actually enjoy spending an hour: quiet, with soft light

2. Check the power

Soft chambers run from a standard power point, drawing roughly 650 to 1,000 W. Plug the unit directly into the wall rather than an extension lead or power board. Hard-shell chambers draw much more power (about 2.6 to 6.7 kW) and seated models need a dedicated circuit installed by a licensed electrician. Check each model's requirements on its product page.

3. Ventilation and temperature

The compressor and oxygen concentrator draw in room air and give off a little heat. A room with normal ventilation is fine. Avoid tiny, airless cupboards, and keep the equipment away from heaters and direct sun. Many of our chambers include integrated air conditioning to keep the cabin comfortable.

4. Think about noise

The control unit hums while it runs, a bit like an air conditioner. If you're sensitive to noise, place the unit as far from your head end as the hoses allow, or on a soft mat.

5. Measure the delivery route

This is the step people forget. Measure every doorway, hallway, staircase and turn between the kerb and the room. Soft chambers are easy to carry in. Hard-shell chambers are large and heavy, so we'll check access with you before ordering.

6. Fire safety basics

Concentrated oxygen makes things burn more easily, so keep the area clear of naked flames, heaters, candles and smoking, and never use oils or aerosols near the chamber. Follow every instruction in your chamber's manual.

Your pre-delivery checklist

  • Room chosen and cleared, with space around the chamber
  • Level floor that can take the weight
  • Power point within reach, no extension leads
  • Normal ventilation, away from heaters and direct sun
  • Delivery route measured, door to door
  • Flames, heaters and aerosols kept away from the area
