Hyperbaric oxygen therapy in Hobart: the hospital unit

Medical hyperbaric treatment in Tasmania is provided by the Department of Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine at the Royal Hobart Hospital, the statewide referral centre, which also runs an outreach clinic in Launceston. Its facility opened in 2020 with a triple-lock chamber for up to 10 patients and two single-person chambers, and its main chamber can also simulate altitude, a first in the southern hemisphere. The unit supports Australia's Antarctic diving program, fitting for the home port of the Antarctic fleet. Treatment is by referral from a health professional. What HBOT sessions cost in Hobart

Wellness hyperbaric is rare in Tasmania. Based on the publicly listed prices we found in October 2026, a Hobart session costs about $80 for 60 minutes or $120 for 90 minutes, with 5-session packs bringing a 60-minute session to about $64. We didn't find a hard-shell wellness venue anywhere in the state.

Climate

Hobart is the coolest Australian capital, with a January average maximum around 22°C and July maximums around 12°C. Overheating is rarely a problem, though our soft chambers include air conditioning for warm days. In winter, set up in a room you'd happily sit in for an hour, and keep heaters well away from the chamber and unit.

Older homes and hills

Most Hobart homes are separate houses, many of them older Georgian, Victorian and Federation homes on the slopes of kunanyi/Mount Wellington, with steps, steep driveways and narrow hallways. Soft chambers arrive packed down and are easy to carry in. For a hard shell, measure every step of the route and check the floor rating.
